After meeting Kelly Wels & taking a quick peak at her book Changing Diapers last summer at Blog Her, it didn’t take long to realize both Kelly, and Changing Diapers were really something special. Changing Diapers is a book that has the potential to change the face of cloth diapers forever, and if there’s anyone in the cloth diapering industry who could accomplish such a task, it’s Kelly. Her mission is to share her love for cloth diapers and advocate for diapering change. Kelly believes that through education and knowledge, parents can be empowered to make more positive diapering choices. I couldn’t agree more!
If I would have met someone like Kelly 12 years ago, my cloth diapering story would have been much different. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn the truth about modern cloth diapers until I was pregnant with our fourth baby. My previous thoughts on cloth diapers consisted of diaper pins, prefolds, water-proof plastic pants, stinky diaper pails & hand-washing poopy diapers in the bath tub. I had no idea there were adorable, practical, modern cloth diapers and accessories available. Heck, I didn’t even know cloth diapers could be washed in the washing machine!
Ever since we started using cloth diapers in September 2010, I’ve become quite the cloth diaper addict, er, I mean advocate. As a birth doula and mommy, I’ve had the opportunity chat with many moms about cloth diapers, and have found most moms still have the same misconceptions about cloth diapers I did. This is where Changing Diapers, The Hip Moms Guide To Modern Cloth Diapering has huge potential for change…
If every mom was educated about modern cloth diapering, and the potential dangers of disposables, I believe many would choose cloth, hands down. How many moms do you know that would knowingly choose to spend thousands of dollars on diapers that expose their little ones to harmful chemicals when there’s a simple and practical alternative? Add in the positive impact cloth diapers have on the environment, the support from other moms, and the sheer cuteness cloth has to offer, and it’s almost a no-brainer.
Changing Diapers has the power to change the way parents look at cloth diapers forever. It’s the next best thing to having Kelly Wels, and several other cloth diapering moms right in your living room explaining everything you need to know about cloth diapering in a hip, easy to understand manner. It dispells all of the common cloth diapering misconceptions, and shows moms that cloth diapers are a real, modern day option, nothing like what our grandmothers used back in the day.

Changing Diapers is filled with gorgeous photographs of babies wearing cloth diapers, and wonderful illustrations that make it easy to understand things like how to fold a prefold, or what an “all-in-two” looks like. You’ll also find helpful quotes from other moms, and “Fluffy Stuff” tips that give advice on everything from getting the perfect fit, to what you can do if you run out of inserts. Kelly leaves nothing out when it comes to cloth diapering, after reading Changing Diapers you will be fully equipped to cloth diaper your baby with confidence and style!
I believe every new mom should have a copy of Changing Diapers whether she plans to cloth diaper or not. In order to change the face of cloth diapers, parents need to be educated and informed of their diapering options, and Changing Diapers does just that!
If you’re already a cloth diapering mom, you’re going to love Changing Diapers- I keep a copy on my coffee table, and one in my diaper bag at all times. It’s a wonderful reference, and I just love sharing it with others every chance I get, especially when I get the famous question ”Why in the world would you want to use cloth diapers?”.
In short, Changing Diapers is all about empowering parents, creating change and spreading the cloth diaper love.
I highly recommend Changing Diapers to every new parent, grandparent, and anyone with a special little one in their life.
Changing Diapers is also an indispensable resource for doulas, childbirth educators and anyone who works with new parents. I recently started giving a copy to each of my doula clients, and 2 out of 3 of the expectant moms I’ve shared Changing Diapers with decided to cloth diaper their babies!
I encourage everyone to join Kelly in her mission of advocating for diapering change! Give Changing Diapers as a gift at baby showers, ask to leave a one in your midwife or O.B’s waiting room, donate a copy to your local library, and share this book with everyone you can!
Every person that reads Changing Diapers and decides to cloth diaper their little one means one less baby being exposed to harmful chemicals, and thousands of diapers prevented from ending up in landfills!
