Dealing With Asthma & Allergies Naturally- Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier Review

Does anyone in your home suffer from Asthma or Allergies?

As a child, I suffered from pretty severe asthma, I can clearly remember having to regularly sit out during P.E. class, having embarrassing asthma attacks at 6th grade camp, and eventually even “having” to take steroids for a period of time. Fortunately, as I reached adulthood the severity of my asthma greatly subsided, and now I suffer mostly from what is considered “allergic (extrinsic) asthma”- meaning that my asthma is typically triggered by inhaled allergens such as dust mite allergen, pet dander, pollen, mold, etc.

Dealing With Asthma & Allergies Naturally

Knowing that asthma and allergies can be genetic, when I became a mother I wanted to do everything possible to keep my children from suffering from the asthma and allergies I struggled with as a child (and still struggle with on occasion in my adult life). I am confident eliminating toxic products from my home, and leading an eco-concious lifestyle has greatly contributed to all of my children being asthma (and for the most part) allergy free, but there is one other step I’ve taken I know has made a huge difference as well!

I believe having an air purifier in my home that removes impurities and allergens from the air has played a big role in keeping my family not only healthy, but also asthma & allergy free. The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top 5 environmental risks to public health, and states the air inside your home may be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outdoors! Having an air purifier in our home has been one of the best ways to deal with asthma and allergies naturally, but regardless of whether your family suffers from either, there are many reasons using a good air purifier can benefit your family’s health…

Common Airborne Pollutants:

Viruses: A cubic meter of air may contain 15,000 flu viruses.

Floating Dust: One ounce of dust contains nearly 42,000 living dust mites. Each mite is expelling 20 fecal pellets every day into the air you breathe.

Allergens: An estimated 1 in 5 Americans suffer from allergies. Allergy is the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages.

Office Supply Chemicals (toner, inks, etc): Odors from felt markers, inks, glues, correction fluid, toner from copiers and other office chemicals can emit vapors at room temperature that over time can cause symptoms similar to inhaling formaldehyde.

Cigarette Smoke and General Household Odors: Both women and men exposed to heavy indoor smoke are 2-3 times more likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Pet Dander: 100% of U.S. households have detectable levels of dog and cat dander.  Short-haired or hairless animals contribute dander and allergens to indoor air pollution just as effectively as long haired animals do. There is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog or cat.

Where These Airborne Pollutants can be Found in your Home

Air Vents: Central air handling systems can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew, and other sources of germs such as viruses and bacteria, which can then distribute these contaminants throughout a home or office.

Furniture: Formaldehyde is found in furniture, particleboard, plywood, and many other products. As it deteriorates, formaldehyde gives off vapors that can cause sensitization and irritation of the eyes and respiratory system, even at low levels.

Upholstery: Dust particles on upholstered furniture can contain textile fibers, decomposing insect parts, pet dander and the flakes of human skin-all of which is released into the air anytime anyone sits down.

Carpet: Carpet can hold 8 times its weight in dirt, pesticides and other toxins (such as automotive fluids from parking lots and lawn pesticides) brought in on shoes and even bare feet. When dry, these toxins become undetectable airborne particles.

Wood Floors: Engineered wood flooring often uses adhesives containing formaldehyde which eventually becomes airborne chemical vapors.

The Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier

Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier

We’ve been using various air purifiers in our home for years, however I must admit that all air purifiers are not created equal, and many can be more of a nuisance than a help. I wish I could say “something is better than nothing”, but unfortunately, when it comes to air purifiers that’s just not the case. Trust me- I have tried a number of air purifiers, many of which do not work, or are so small or inefficient you’d need to have at least three or four of them to adequately clean the air in just one room!

When I received the Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier to review, I was able to replace two of the current air purifiers we were using in our home, and the difference has been amazing! Seasonal changes (Summer to Fall, and Spring to Summer especially) are when I have the biggest problems with my asthma and allergies, and so far my symptoms have been much more mild than usual! Plus, the features of the Fellowes AP-200PH Air Purifier are pretty impressive…

4-Stage Purification System

4-Stage Purification System

The AP-300PH Air Purifier uses an innovative 4-stage purification system to safely remove airborne pollutants as small as 0.3 microns from your air, including viruses, allergens, germs, pollen, odors, pet dander, and more.

1. Carbon Filter Safely Removes Large Airborne Particles

1. Carbon Filter Safely Removes Large Airborne Particles

The AP-300PH’s four-stage purification system lets you get the most out of your air purifier. The purifier’s carbon filter removes odors and captures large airborne particles from your room.
2. Sanitized Technology Keeps Carbon Filter Clean

2. Sanitized Technology Keeps Carbon Filter Clean

The carbon filter is equipped with Sanitized technology, which effectively reduces the development of bacteria, fungi, and dust mites on the carbon filter itself. This is important because, without this technology, microbes can settle on the filter and be re-circulated into the air.
3. True HEPA Filter Removes Small Particles

3. True HEPA Filter Removes Small Particles

Capable of filtering even the smallest microbes, the True HEPA filter is designed to safely remove 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns from your home or office, including mold spores, pollen, dust mites, most airborne microbes, allergens, pet dander, viruses, germs, bacteria, and cigarette smoke. Yellow and red lights on the display panel indicate when the filter needs changing, ensuring that you change your True HEPA filter when needed. The filter is also cost effective–with normal usage, your True HEPA filter will last an average of 12 months.
4. PlasmaTRUE™ Technology Neutralizes Germs and Bacteria

The AP-300PH utilizes PlasmaTRUE™ Technology to instantly neutralize harmful germs, viruses, and bacteria in the air. The energized particles released by this technology purify the filtered air without producing ozone or other harmful pollutants.

AHAM Certification

AHAM Certification

Fellowes® Air Purifiers have been certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) with three Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) numbers which indicate the volume of filtered air delivered by the air purifiers (measured in ft3/min). There are three CADR ratings – one for smoke, one for pollen and one for dust. The higher the number, the faster the air purifier filters the air.
What I Love About The Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier
Fellowes Air Purifier

I don’t think I’ve ever had an air purifier with so many advanced features, and most importantly, is so effective! Aside from the relief I have seen with my asthma & allergies, I love knowing my family is breathing clean air, and the particles released by this air purifier are able to clean the air without producing ozone or other harmful pollutants- so it’s good for the earth too! I also love that the Fellowes Air Purifier includes an air purity sensor that monitors the air quality and automatically adjusts the fan speed to keep the air cleaner! I have plenty of other things commit my time to, so knowing the Fellowes Air Purifier is always monitoring the air in my home for me, and adjusts itself as needed means one less thing I have to hassle with or worry about, which is always a good thing!

  1. Hi,
Nice Blog, where you got lots of informative on this topic Asthma air purifiers.Really Nice one.
Thanks for sharing this information.Keep Sharing more and more.

  2. The air is filled with hundreds or perhaps thousands of different kinds of toxic contaminates out there. Some we know about and others we do not. That is the scary part of it! We just don’t know enough about the long term exposure of inhaling these airborne pollutants day and night.
We have atleast control over purifing our indoor air, with the help of air purifiers.
HEPA and activated carbon filtration are vital components in an air purifier unit.

  3. To obtain an air purifier unit one must consider three major charactertic components.
HEPA and activated carbon filtration, along with ultraviolate lighting is needed.
HEPA filters to clean the household air from toxic particles at microscopic levels. In addition, mold, allergens, dust mites, smoke, pet dander, pollen, viruses, and bacteria can become trapped within this amazing cloth like filter.
Carbon filtration will also, work together with the HEPA filter, to purify the household air, along these lines. It will adsorb bacteria, fungi, dust mites, and larger dust particles.
Ultraviolate lighting will aid in destroying the airborne germs.

I will have to check on the current models. For me it is spring tree pollen and fall plant pollen that cause problems. This Spring is starting off badly. Once the Bradford Pears start blooming, I know I am looking at weeks of sneezing, coughing, red & itchy eyes and feeling miserable. We had a few air filters years ago, but they didn’t do much. Since we also have dogs and cats, I need to check this out and see if it can help.

    Thanks for the review.
