Have you heard of reverse trick or treating? It’s a wonderful concept created by the good people over at Global Exchange to bring attention to the plight of cocoa farmers and raise awareness for the benefits of Fair Trade. I recently came across the Equal Exchange Reverse Trick Or Treating Facebook Page and knew this was something I wanted my kidlets to participate in!
“This Halloween, you can help end the exploitation of adults and children working in the cocoa industry and raise awareness of Fair Trade! Trick-or-treaters will be handing Fair Trade chocolate back to adults, with informational cards attached, to explain the problems of the cocoa industry and how Fair Trade presents a solution. Through providing children with an opportunity to have their voice heard, hundreds of thousands of households in the US are getting the message that child labor and forced labor will not be tolerated by our kids. “ -Equal Exchange
Here’s how you can join in…
1. Sign up at the Reverse Trick Or Treating Website by October 21st. You will receive a kit that contains 15 mini chocolates, informational cards and an instruction leaflet. The kits are free, you only pay $7.50 for shipping and handling. (If you are a group, school or organization and wish to purchase a group kit, please visit Equal Exchange’s order page.)
2. Assemble your kit- each kit includes minis, cards, glue dots, and instructions for assembly.
3. Go trick-or-treating as you normally would, and have your kidlets offer one card to an adult at each house they visit.
If you don’t have a chance to order a kit, you can still download free fliers here and have your kidlets pass them out on Halloween!
Since Halloween is all about candy, it’s a perfect time to teach kidlets about the problems in the cocoa industry, and how they can make a difference. “The Dark Side Of Chocolate” is a perfect “scary movie” to share with your family and friends prior to reverse trick or treating. We’re having a screening of the dvd at our house a few days before Halloween to educate friends & encourage them to pass out the reverse trick or treating fliers with us!
Reverse trick or treating is a wonderful way to bring real meaning & purpose to the Halloween holiday. I am so excited to start this new tradition with our family. Have you ever gone reverse trick or treating before, or will you be participating for the first time this year? I’d love to hear about your experiences with reverse trick or treating, or any other special Halloween traditions you and your family share!

I just followed you on GFC. I love that you’re a “green mama.” I am too!
Thanks for stopping by yesterday, I am following back and enjoying your blog. I love the idea of reverse-trick or treating, this would be a great thing to do in a nursing home or senior center!! We do not eat a lot of chocolate because it is so hard on the environment. I am also very mindful of where my tea and coffees come from and how they are grown. Thanks for sharing this information with folks!

I have never dressed up and gone trick or treating even though my brother did. I have never understood the concept. I also don’t get how kids seem to think you have to give candy out. Our house got egged one year when we didn’t answer the door.
Oh my goodness, that’s terrible! In our neighborhood you simply turn off your porch light if you aren’t passing out candy, and trick-or-treaters wont bother you.

We have lots of reverse tick or treating packets (ten cards with fair trade chocolate attached) while supplies last!
I’ve always wanted to do something like this! Sadly, with the stranger-danger mania that ran rampant through my youth, and with the prevalence of international threat in the media, I don’t know if there’s going to be any trick-or-treating when I have children. In 2010, I dressed up and had a nice assortment of candy ready (none of that cheap, hard stuff), but I only saw two trick-or-treating groups go by, and neither of them stopped by my house. Plus, trick-or-treating ends before it even gets dark, these days! What’s the fun in that?
Wow – I love that idea. It would be great to give to kids too so they can learn more about fair trade.

When our children were small and went Trick or Treating, we would “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” when the school offered it. Not exactly the same as reverse Trick or Treating, but still offers an important message and lesson.
